The Great Broadcast of the Portuguese World

The Great Broadcast of the Portuguese World is the second chapter of the Teatrão’s Portuguese Home. A series of shows, debates and research the company produced about the New State. After Eu Salazar, our focus is turned to the Emissora Nacional (EN) or National Broadcast and its role in the propagation of the ideology of the New State, specifically at the time that António Ferro took the position of director. What interested us was the correlation between cultural policy of the state and the programming of the EN, notably the “staging” strategy of the regime and the process of “portuguesation”. The big change in the means of production of the EN to reach these goals, and its success and duration are clues to interpret the socio-cultural transformation and impact the New State had on our country. Confronting the present, this material allows us to critically reflect on how new populist waves influence the mass media to propagate the ideas that portray dictatorships as inevitable solutions for the social cancers staging realities to make their point.

Synopse

At the studio of the National Broadcast, five employees execute the 21 years of program in one and a half hours of broadcast. At its beginning, in 1940, it is marked with the change of the director of the Broadcast. The time when Henrique Galvão was replaced by António Ferro. He begins by coproducing a program with the National Front of Happiness at Work, looking to educate and not bore the nation. To do this, the broadcast was recorded with a studio audience with a varied line-up. The famous radio dialogues by Olavo d’Eça Leal, the Sentimental Mail of Homemade Things (like a Dear Abby), poetic moments and radio drama are spiced up with live recordings of songs sung by the stars of the Broadcast, creating a bouquet of beautiful numbers to bring joy to the families at home. The program also has news segments that rock the world and commercials with the best products for the listeners at home. It’ll be time spent with pride, exaltation, happiness as well as friendship, all while sitting comfortably in your seat.
